7.1 Grades
A grade shall be awarded for each completed course unless the higher education institution provides otherwise. The higher education institution may provide which grading system is to be used. The grade is to be determined by a teacher specially appointed by the higher education institution (examiner). (Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 6, section 18, in Swedish).
A three-grade scale is used at Umeå University. The grade awarded is expressed by one of the following terms: failed, pass or pass with distinction. Exemption from this three-grade scale may be granted by the vice-chancellor (Dnr 100-1190-11).
The programmes for engineering and law are examples of programmes with courses with a different scale (four-tiered). The grades used should be stated in the syllabus.
Using the “ECTS Grading Table”
If students so request, a Transcript of Records shall be issued for each completed course, stating the distribution of pass grades awarded since the course was first introduced (with that particular course code) up to the time when the student completed the course.
If there is a period of at least two years from the introduction of the course up to the time when the student completed the course from which no information is available, the distribution of grades shall not be reported.
