Book a tutor
Our focus is to help students become more independent writers and aware of their own writing process and skills.
1. Contact the Academic Resource Centre and schedule an appointment. Make sure you contact us well in advance of a deadline, preferably when you begin to write your paper.
2. Be certain that you follow the writing instructions and advice that you have received from the department. Use the spelling and grammar check function in your word processing software.
3. E-mail your text so that we have it one day before the scheduled appointment at the Centre, or follow the agreement you have with your writing tutor. In your e-mail please include information about what type of text it is, which study program and term you are in, and what you feel you need help with.
4. Please do not forget to contact us if you have to cancel your appointment.
Appointments are not always available the same week an appointment is requested. At the end of a term, there can be a two-week waiting period for an appointment.
Please note! The ARC does not provide editing or correcting services nor do we evaluate students’ writing. It is important to understand that we do cover some basic language and writing instruction; however, we do not provide remedial writing instruction to students. Our services are especially helpful for students who have an active interest in developing their own writing skills.
We can only provide feedback on texts that are a part of a Umeå University course. We are not able to give feedback on CVs, scholarship applications or PhD proposals being submitted to other universities.
Prior to an appointment you may be asked to work with certain features in your paper. After you have worked with this initial feedback in your text, then you can send the revised draft. If the writing tutor determines that these features have not been addressed in the paper, then the appointment can be cancelled.
