Rules and Regulations

The university is a public authority and as such its activities are regulated centrally by laws and ordinances. Local regulatory frameworks contain rules that are specific to Umeå University. Both students and employees must comply with these codes of practice.

Local regulatory frameworks

Local regulatory frameworks are based on decisions taken by the University Board or the Vice-Chancellor. One of the most important category of regulatory frameworks concerning your studies are the course syllabi. In the 'Kursplanesök' (course syllabus search function, in Swedish) you can search for your course syllabus. you may also turn to department responsible for the course to get the current course syllabus.

Code of Rules and Procedures at Umeå University

Do you have questions about your rights and obligations as a student or what governs the university’s activities and operations? The Code of Rules and Procedures is a collation of everything from laws and ordinances of concern to the university to the university's own rules and policies.

Central laws, ordinances and regulations

Central regulatory frameworks have been laid down either by the Government or Parliament. The National Agency for Higher Education also has the authority to issue regulations that supplement and clarify the regulations contained in the Higher Education Act and the Higher Education Ordinance.

The Higher Education Act

The Higher Education Act contains regulations that apply to institutions of higher education under government, municipal or county council authority. The Higher Education Act can be found via the link to 'Laws and regulations' to the right.

The Higher Education Ordinance

The Higher Education Ordinance contains rules that supplement the regulations in the Higher Education Act. The Higher Education Ordinance can be found via the link to 'Laws and regulations' to the right.

The Swedish National Agency for Higher Education

The National Agency for Higher Education has the authority to issue regulations that supplement and clarify the regulations contained in the Higher Education Act and the Higher Education Ordinance.
